A Bangor, Maine woman who conned people around the world by claiming to be an heiress is guilty of fraud.
Bangor, Maine Native Convicted of Fraud for International Crimes
Marianne Andle graduated from Bangor High School in 1987, but she essentially vanished soon after graduation because she never used her real name. Instead, Andle went by Marianne Smyth, Mair, and several other names while she traveled the world, cheating people out of large amounts of money.

Police in Maine arrested Marianne Smyth in 2024, according to the Guardian, after receiving a tip from someone who heard her story on a podcast and knew the rental house in Bingham where she was staying.
Extradition paperwork to Ireland from the U.S. District Court in Bangor from February 2024, states that Smyth, who was previously convicted of two felonies for defrauding victims out of over $60,000, was accused of four new counts of fraud by abuse of position and four counts of theft.
According to IrishCentral.com, the newest crime occurred in Northern Ireland between March 2008 and October 2010 when Smyth was working as an independent mortgage advisor.

Smyth's crimes were featured on Whoopi Goldberg's show 'The Con,' which told the story of how she swindled $100,000 out of a Hollywood producer. At the time, she was posing as an Irish heiress.

On Thursday, September 4, Marianne Smyth was found guilty of multiple counts of fraud and theft in an Irish courtroom. It took the jury just 20 minutes to deliver their verdict.
Smyth will remain in jail until her sentencing in early October.
