Why a SWISS Flight to New York was Diverted to Bangor Maine

SWISS technical experts came to Bangor to inspect the plane and found a charging case for headphones that had slipped into a seat and became jammed there.
This damaged the device causing it to heat up and produce smoke.

The storage case, like many electronic devices, contains lithium batteries, which can overheat, if damaged or if they malfunction.
In worse case scenarios, the batteries can cause a fire.
