Hancock seafood restaurant Ruth & Wimpy’s is open for business after its owners pushed back the opening of the restaurant following the death of their son and his partner.

Ruth & Wimpy's was originally scheduled to open for the season on April 27 but its opening date was moved to May 4 after the death of Layn Wilbur, 44, of Hancock and his partner, Cinnamon Riddell, 45, of Sullivan.

The two were killed in an accident on I-95 in South Carolina. The wreck occurred when one of the tires of a northbound Mercury Marquis blew out, causing the vehicle to collide with the minivan Wilbur and Riddell were riding in. The minivan crashed into the median and then struck a tree.

The couple's children also were riding in the minivan and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

A spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction to benefit the children is scheduled for Saturday, May 20 at Sumner Memorial High School.

The auction will run from 3-6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 5 p.m.
