
New Report Ranks Maine as America’s Second-Least Diverse State
Our Pine Tree State ranked near the bottom for diversity in 2026, according to a recent report.

WalletHub released its 2026 Most and Least Diverse States in America report, comparing all 50 states across socioeconomic, cultural, economic, household, religious, and political diversity.
The personal finance company used 14 weighted metrics to calculate each state’s overall score, with higher scores representing greater diversity.

Maine ranked 49th overall, placing 49th in both racial and ethnic diversity and religious diversity, according to the report.
The state performed best in worker-class diversity at 15th and income diversity at 19th, while placing 45th in linguistic diversity and 48th in household-size diversity.
West Virginia ranked 50th overall, making it the least diverse state in the report.
Experts said diverse states can benefit from greater cultural exchange, creativity and economic opportunity, while also facing challenges involving inequality, segregation, crime, and higher living costs.

And there you have it! Maine finished ahead of only West Virginia in WalletHub’s nationwide diversity ranking.
