Oxford’s Fire Chief Dies During Firefighter Memorial
Oxford's Fire Chief suffered a medical emergency during the memorial service for firefighter Joel Barnes, and died at the hospital.
The Oxford Fire Department says Chief Gary Sacco suffered an unknown medical problem while at the public memorial service for fallen Fire Captain Joel Barnes Sunday, at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. Chief Sacco was rushed to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he died.
The 63-year-old had held the position of Fire Chief in Oxford for 2 years, after retiring from the New Gloucester Fire Department. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
In a post on the department's Facebook page, Chief Sacco was lauded for being a consummate professional, who loved the job, and had a passion for the fire service. 'Chief Sacco was a respected leader, mentor, and positive role model.'
A procession Monday morning will carry Sacco from Portland to Lewiston. Firefighters from Oxford, New Gloucester, and Westbrook will participate.
