The tasty food is just one part of a fun, historical weekend in Orrington at the 19th Century Curran Village.

One thing I've learned about the people of Orrington is they know how to have fun. From an endless yard sale in the summer to skating on Fields Pond in winter, there's always something going on. Now that it's March, the folks at the 19th Century Curran Village have decided to celebrate both the Irish traditions of St. Patrick's Day and the traditional Maine maple events, combined as one.

What are the Maple and Irish Parts of the Day?

It's called 'An Old-fashioned Maple Syrup and Irish Celebration' and it promises lots of tasty fun for all ages. Saturday, March 19th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m, there will be an amazing amount of activities happening at the historical farm on Fields Pond Road in Orrington.

Curran Village has its own sugar shack and will be holding sugaring off demonstrations For anyone who doesn't know, that means they'll be converting maple sap into syrup. They'll demonstrate how trees are tapped and have maple syrup for sale, as well as serve it up over ice cream. Yum!

The Irish side of the celebration will include homemade Irish Stew, soda bread, hot Jonnie cakes, cookies, and muffins in the farmhouse. Can you imagine how delicious the farm will smell? You'll be serenaded while you eat too by the bluegrass band, Freshly Cut Grass.

Will the 19th Century Curran Village Also Have Historical Demos?

Visitors will be able to take a ride in a Model T car and/or a bobsled pulled by draft horses. There will be Blacksmithing and Woodworking demonstrations, as well as a demo of an 1880s Hildreth Wood Splitter, and so much more going on. The whole family will have fun. Oh, and you'll be able to tour the Village's latest addition - a carousel from 1884 that was just recently reconstructed at the Orrington site.

What Does it Cost?

Admission is just $10 for adults and $5 for children under 15. Everything is included in the price, except for the bobsled ride which will cost an extra $5 per person. If the weather Saturday is bad, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday, March 20th, from 10 to 3.
