80-Year-Old Man Called Police to Report An Alleged Assault By His Stepson
According to the Oxford County Sheriff's Office, deputies from both departments responded to a residence at 229 Tucker Road after receiving a 911 call. The caller told authorities that he was an 80-year-old man who was allegedly the victim of a domestic assault that he said was committed by his stepson, Eric Newell.
When the deputies arrived at the scene, they tried to communicate with Newell but were unsuccessful in de-escalating the situation. When Mr. Newell emerged from the house, he was armed with a knife and allegedly approached the members of law enforcement. The deputies issued commands, and when Newell didn't comply, two of them shot him. He died at the scene.
Oxford County Deputies Are On Administrative Leave During the Investigation
The two Oxford County deputies involved in the shooting, Deputy Reece Rodrique and Deputy Derek MacDonald, have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Maine Attorney General's Office.
This is standard procedure for any law enforcement-involved shooting in Maine.
