Sometimes, I think folks think literacy isn't the issue it used to be because we live in this modern age. Between the internet, and the infinite ways people can communicate these days, it's easy to forget that there are lots of adults right here in the Bangor area that struggle with reading.

Literacy Volunteers of Bangor has been helping people in the Bangor area for over 50 years, but right now, they could use a little of that help in return. Right now, they are in need of folks who can donate their time as tutors that help with all their students. And the students that need the help aren't always who you think they are.

There are lots of older folks that are low literacy, as well as people from other parts of the world who move here from away that speak English as a second language. Both these groups of people sometimes have trouble applying for jobs, reading to their kids or grand kids, or even understanding medical instructions.

LVB helps folks with all these every day skills that you and I take for granted. But again, right now, if you have some spare time, they could use your help. And from everything I've ever heard from folks involved in the organization, tutoring is incredibly rewarding. So maybe give it some thought...

If it sounds like it might be a good fit for you, you can check out the process and apply online right here.
