Maine Drug Enforcement Agents arrested a Deer Isle man for trafficking in heroin while he was out on bail for a similar arrest last month.

DEA Commander Peter Arno said agents assigned to the task force office in Ellsworth received information earlier this week that Kenneth Gray, age 27 or Deer Isle, had recently received a shipment of heroin for re-distribution in the Deer Isle/Stonington area of Hancock County. Agents were familiar with Gray since he was out on bail after they had arrested him last month on heroin trafficking charges.

Wednesday afternoon, drug agents, with the assistance of the Hancock County Sheriff's office, stopped a vehicle in Deer Isle in which Gray was a passenger. Gray's bail conditions made him subject to random searches, so the officers looked through the vehicle. Seized were three 'fingers' of heroin, with a total weight of just over 30 grams. The street value of the heroin is approximately $10,000. In addition, agents recovered over $4,000 in suspected cash proceeds from the illegal sale of drugs.

Following his arrest, Gray was taken to the Hancock County Jail and charged with Class 'A' Aggravated Trafficking in Heroin and Violation of Conditions of Release, based on the pending heroin trafficking charge from December. The charge was aggravated because of the amount of heroin seized. Gray has been denied bail until he makes his first court appearance on Friday.

MDEA was assisted in this investigation by the Hancock County Sheriff's Office and State of Maine Probation and Parole. This investigation is continuing and more arrests are likely. Anyone with information about this investigation or the illegal sale of drugs is urged to contact the MDEA office closest to you or by calling the MDEA tip-line at 800-452-6457.
