Bangor city crews are working on a sinkhole that has opened up on Main Street, near the site of the new YMCA.

Travel on Main Street in Bangor just got a little more complicated when a sinkhole appeared in the roadway, near the intersection of Maine and Railroad Streets.

The sinkhole is in the southbound lanes, where drivers would be heading toward Hampden.
Bangor, Maine, Traffic on Main Street is Being Affected By a Sinkhole
Both lanes headed south, or away from the downtown area, are closed to traffic in that area while crews work to determine the cause and repair the street.
The lanes headed north, or into the downtown area, will be narrowed to one lane. Southbound traffic will be diverted to the northbound side of the median until the issue is resolved.

That traffic pattern is clearly marked for motorists.
Railroad Street is closed to traffic until further notice.
Officials say this traffic pattern may need to continue into Wednesday, so morning commuters should be prepared as they head out in the morning.
Bangor, Maine, City Officials are Looking for the Cause of a Sinkhole on Main Street
According to a post on the City of Bangor's Facebook page, the cause of the sinkhole is uncertain, but it may be related to an old stone sewer line that crosses Main Street.
Bangor has seen multiple sinkholes in recent years, as its 100-year-old underground water and sewer system continues to fail.
