A trip to the mailbox on Saturday became an adorable wildlife encounter when a fawn decided to trot over and say hi.

It was an unexpected bonus, as I was leaving the house at around 12:30 Saturday, headed to a family barbecue. I stopped at the end of our private road to check the mailbox when I spotted this fawn in the middle of the road. I immediately remembered that I had my camera and even had the telephoto lens already attached, so I quietly hurried back to my car (which you can hear running in the background) and grabbed it.

I was so afraid that I'd spook the cute little deer that I was trying to be stealthy. But, as it turned out, I had nothing to worry about. The fawn saw me and, instead of dashing back the way it had come from, it started running toward me. To say I was surprised is an understatement. I actually started to become concerned that the deer was getting too close, but then remembered that I was using a longer lens. Still, it got about 20 yards from me before dashing onto a neighbor's yard and into the woods.

From now on, I think I'll keep my camera with me at all times. You just never know what you might find!
