An apartment house fire in Portland on Monday left one person dead and about 30 homeless.

WGME-TV reports the fire at 609 Ocean Avenue was reported just after 4 p.m. on Monday. The outside of the building is deceiving, as little damage is visible from teh exterior. Residents say there were many working smoke detectors in the building that were updated often. Officials say it could have been much worse.

The name of the deceased is being withheld, pending notification of family. The Red Cross is helping the tenants displaced by the fire.

Investigators with the State Fire Marshal's Office are now working to determine how the fire started.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
