Once named the 'Most Haunted Lighthouse' in the country, the Owls Head Lighthouse has quite an interesting history.

Several stories support the idea that the Owls Head Lighthouse, which opened in 1825, could be or, perhaps, is haunted. One of those tales centers on frozen lovers, who were pummelled by frigid water on a ship that was caught on an icy ledge.

A third man on the ship, Seaman Elliot, made his way to the lighthouse keeper, who led a search party to save the couple. By then, they were encased in ice and feared dead. The keeper slowly thawed the lovers who, according to New England Lighthouse Stories, married sometime later. Seaman Elliot never recovered.

Maine Keeper's Wife Had an Invisible Visitor to Her Bed Who Made An Impression

Whether the stories of the hauntings have anything to do with that incident is unknown, but they will give you goosebumps. Like the lighthouse keeper's wife, Denise, who said her husband, Andy Germann, had gone outside to secure some construction materials, when she thought she felt him get back in bed.

But when Denise turned over, there was an indentation in the bed, as if an invisible person were lying there. Even creepier, it was moving, as if the person were shifting positions. She finally had to ask the invisible spectre to leave so she could sleep.

Then There's the Story of Young Claire, Who's Invisible Friend Was a Sea Captain

New England Lighthouses Virtual Guide says the Germanns warned the new lighthouse tenders about their experiences, but Debbie and Gerard Graham didn't take it seriously. They even let their young daughter, Claire, stay in the room the Germanns said had the most activity. Claire developed a fondness for an imaginary friend, she said looked like a sea captain.

One night, Claire ran into her parents' room, yelling, "Fog's rollin' in! Time to put the foghorn on!" Her parents have no idea what prompted her to say that or use that terminology.

Other sightings center around a ghostly woman, who witnesses claim to have seen in a window, or rocking a chair in a child's room. Then there were the footprints that seemed to come out of nowhere, leading to the lighthouse.

Whether it's haunted or not, this is a beautiful lighthouse that graces the coast of Maine. Maybe you could visit it this summer and linger in the gift shop... if you dare.

Creepy Maine Cryptids

Maine has everything needed to support a healthy -- and scary -- population of cryptids. The state is remote with lots of fields, forests, rivers, and lakes -- all of which can be home to the elusive creatures in the gallery below. The photos below were generated by artificial intelligence from documented descriptions of the cryptids. Come on. How else are we supposed to get photos of such elusive -- and maybe mythical? -- creatures?
