Camping Was a Way of Life When I Was Growing Up

I grew up going camping, in a small pop-up that my family of five took across the country when I was twelve. We stayed in family campgrounds, usually KOAs, where we knew there would be clean bathrooms and a camp store. Camping is in my blood. Other than California vacation, however, our shorter excursions were rarely planned. We'd decide we wanted to get away, and we'd go.

This Campground is a True Rustic Experience on the Coast of Maine

Or maybe it's the call of the loons bringing them back, year after year, like cult members following their beloved leader.

Creepy Maine Cryptids

Maine has everything needed to support a healthy -- and scary -- population of cryptids. The state is remote with lots of fields, forests, rivers, and lakes -- all of which can be home to the elusive creatures in the gallery below. The photos below were generated by artificial intelligence from documented descriptions of the cryptids. Come on. How else are we supposed to get photos of such elusive -- and maybe mythical? -- creatures?
