An 18-year-old is accused of shooting a man early Thursday morning in Newport.

Centralmaine.com reports police were called for a disturbance at the Gilman Trailer Park at around 1 a.m., and then informed that someone had been shot. When officers arrived, they found a 27-year-old man with a gunshot wound in his leg. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The victim's name has not been released.

Police say the situation started when an underage girl stole alcohol from the local Hannaford. Late Wednesday night, a group of people were drinking the booze and then started fighting, using baseball bats as weapons. That's when 18-year-old Nathan Wheeler got a gun from his home and allegedly shot the victim in the leg.

The teen then ran off, causing police to search for him. He was finally located at around 2:30 a.m. Thursday hiding in his grandmother's house.

Wheeler is charged with aggravated assault and aggravated reckless conduct.
