Man Who Confronted Police in Rumford With a Rifle is Fatally Shot
Rumford Police are reporting a fatal officer-involved shooting in front of the police station.
What Happened?
Officials say it was approximately 8:21 Monday evening when a resident went to the police station to report someone who had allegedly been following them around town in a vehicle that was unknown to them. Officers were interviewing the resident in front of the police station when the vehicle in question pulled up.
According to the Rumford Police, a person in the vehicle confronted police with a rifle. Shots were fired by two members of law enforcement and the male suspect was then transported by Med-Care Ambulance to the Rumford Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m.
Have Police Released the Identity of the Deceased?
The deceased has been identified as Sean B. Dyment, 23, of Canton.
Who Are the Officers Involved?
Both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Maine Attorney General's Office. They have been identified as Oxford County Sheriff's Deputy Corporal Joshua Aylward and Deputy Matthew Steinort. This is standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting.
