A Waldoboro man was shot and killed overnight after allegedly shooting a police officer.

According to WMTW-TV, officers responded to 81 Rivers Bend Road at around 1:00 Sunday morning for reports of a domestic violence-related incident. Officer John Lash was the first one on the scene and he was shot in the back during an armed confrontation with 57-year-old Jon Alspaugh.

Police say Lash then returned fire, shooting and killing Alspaugh. Officer Lash was wearing a bulletproof vest and was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

Lash has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by the Attorney General's office, which is standard procedure for police-involved shootings.
