Three people lost their lives in two separate incidents on Maine waterways over the Labor Day weekend.

Maine Officials say Two Women Died in a Boat Crash on Flagstaff Lake

On Saturday, Farhana Nasir, 53, of Selden, New York, and Kiran Akbar, 23, of Lake Grove, New York, both passed away at the scene of a boat crash on Flaggstaff Lake. Noor Nasir, 22, of New York, was transported by LifeFlight to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she was listed in critical condition.

Mark Latti of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says it was around 1:30 Saturday afternoon when the bow of a pontoon boat containing seven people started to go underwater in front of the beach at the Cathefral Pines Campground. The driver, John Morris, 50, of Eustis, tried to raise the bow, but it continued to go under until the boat flipped.

All seven passengers were thrown out of the boat, approximately 180 feet out.

Witnesses on the shore rushed to help the boat passengers and got all seven to shore.

Officials say no one in the boat was wearing life jackets. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.

Maine Marine Patrol Locates the Body of Massachusetts Man Near Long Island Ledges

On Sunday, the body of Mark Metzger, 47, of Waltham, Massachusetts, was recovered from Long Island Ledges by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Mr. Metzger's friends reported him missing just after 11:30 Sunday morning, after they weren't able to locate him aboard his 19-foot sailboat. The boat was anchored on the western side of Bremen Long Island.

Several agencies participated in the search for Metzger, until his body was located by Good Samaritans at approximately 1:30 that afternoon.

Both of these incidents remain under investigation.
