Now that we’ve got that sorted, which two sandwiches invented right here in Maine are being showcased?
According to LoveFood and their recent report highlighting ‘Super Sandwiches Invented in America, State by State,’ the two sandwiches from Maine are the Italian sandwich and the cold lobster roll.
Maine’s Italian sandwich, similar to the New York hero or Philly hoagie, was created by baker Giovanni Amato around 1902.
According to LoveFood, Giovanni Amato began selling loaves of Italian bread filled with meats, cheese, and vegetables to dock workers on Portland’s waterfront. Amato’s legacy lives on through his namesake sandwich shop, now a beloved regional chain with over 40 locations across the East Coast.
Our take on the lobster roll swaps butter for mayo, keeping things simple with fresh lobster meat, seasoning, and just enough celery or scallions for crunch.
LoveFood continues that while Connecticut may have started the hot version, Maine perfected the cold roll—best enjoyed at classic seaside spots like Bob’s Clam Hut in Kittery or The Clam Shack in Kennebunk.

And there you have it! Maine is the birthplace of the Italian sandwich and the cold lobster roll.
