Susan Collins Reacts to Canada's Tariff Change Affecting Seafood

The senator from Aroostook County is praising our neighbors to the north following a recent move in the ongoing trade dispute.

On August 27th, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said on Facebook that she welcomed Canada’s decision to remove seafood and fish products from its retaliatory tariff list.

Saying the tariffs could have significantly harmed Maine lobstermen and a key market during the fall fishing season, Collins urged the U.S. to respond by returning to negotiations with Canada and working toward a resolution.

In her statement, Collins said Canada is one of the United States’ closest allies and largest trading partners, arguing that continued tariffs could hurt Maine families, businesses, municipalities, manufacturers, and farmers.

She said she raised those concerns with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, specifically pointing to potential impacts on Maine’s forest, food, cement, and road salt industries, as well as higher costs for towns that rely on Canadian road salt.

The U.S.-Canada trade dispute began after the Trump administration imposed new tariffs on Canadian goods, prompting Canada to respond with tariffs of its own on certain American products as a way to pressure the U.S. to remove its measures.

Canada has recently removed some of those retaliatory measures, though other trade restrictions remain as the two countries continue negotiations.
