Maine's Attorney General is warning residents of scammers posing as Maine Revenue officials claiming to gather info for relief checks.

Mainers are anxiously awaiting the $850 relief checks promised by Governor Janet Mills. So much so, in fact, that they're willing to do whatever it takes to make sure they receive theirs.  And, unfortunately, it comes as no surprise that scammers are using that excitement to try and trick people out of their money.

Attorney General Aaron Frey says residents need to understand that Maine Revenue will not be calling, asking for your information.

Maine Revenue Services already has all the information it needs to issue these relief checks, so no one needs to share any information to collect this check. As always, do not share any identifying information with anyone demanding such information over the phone without independently confirming their identity.

Eligibility for the $850 relief check is based upon the 2021 Maine individual income tax return that residents filed. The first round of checks will be mailed in June 2022 and will be delivered on a rolling basis through the end of the year, as returns are received. All the checks will be delivered through the U.S. Postal Service.

Information about the relief checks can be found on a website posted by the state of Maine. Questions about who will receive the checks and anything you may need to do, like make sure the post office has your correct address, can be found there.

Maine residents who believe they are a victim or who want more information about identity theft, should visit the state of Maine website.
