Maine Police charged a suspect with murder for the death of a woman whose body was found near Home Depot in South Portland.

Who Was Arrested?

Gary Mariner, 65, of West Newfield, Maine is charged with murder.

What Do We Know About the Victim?

It was on September 5th, 2023 when the body of Danielle Goodwin, 52, of Freeport was discovered off South Portland's, Clark's Pond Road. At the time, officials said she was found down an embankment in a wooded area near a Home Depot store. Her body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where it was determined that her death was a homicide.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says an investigation over the past eight weeks led investigators from the Maine State Police, the ATF, and members of police departments from Portland, South Portland, and Saco to Mariner. After numerous interviews and the execution of search warrants within the greater Portland area, investigators had enough evidence to make an arrest.

When Was Mariner Taken Into Custody?

On Thursday, November 2nd, Mariner was taken into custody in Saco on a charge of murder. He's expected to make his first court appearance in York District Court on Monday.
