Get the Fam, Maine Open Lighthouse Day is THIS Saturday
Surely you have visited one of Maine's many lighthouses. Whilst there, you have certainly appreciated the history and beauty of each head light but have also wondered what it looks like inside the lighthouse. Well, this Saturday, September 14th is your chance.
Maine Open Lighthouse Day Occurs Annually in September
Through combined efforts by the United States Coast Guard, the Maine Office of Tourism and the American Lighthouse Foundation, approximately 15 of Maine's lighthouses will be open to tour (at almost all of the locations) the lighthouse tower and keeper's house from 9am until 3pm unless otherwise posted. Here are a few that will be open!
Marshall Point Lighthouse is Participating in Maine Open Lighthouse Day
This is an extremely popular lighthouse located in Port Clyde thanks to the film, "Forrest Gump." We started with this lighthouse because it is the only tower that will unfortunately NOT be open for visitors this Saturday. It is still recovering from storm damage that was suffered earlier this year.
The other historical buildings at Marshall Point will be open, however, which includes a charming gift shop and cute, educational museum. The staff there are extremely sweet as well. Despite the tower closure, this is a lighthouse to visit not just on Maine Open Lighthouse Day, but year-round.

Fort Point Light was established in 1836 in Stockton Springs, at the west side of the mouth of the Penobscot River, to aid vessels bound for Bangor, a leading lumber port. The town of Stockton Springs was also a lumber port and a shipping point for Maine's potato industry. - newenglandlighthouses.net
While the keeper’s house is the residence of the park ranger and his family, which, how cool would that be to live there, the tower will be open this Saturday to visitors. This lighthouse offers breathtaking views from the cliffs of coastal Maine, and it is actively used by the Coast Guard. There is so much Maine history to learn at this location as well.
A Couple Maine Open Lighthouse Day Structures Require a Water Vessel to Visit
Some lighthouses that are open for Maine Open Lighthouse Day will require a water vessel to get to. On that list is the beautiful light station on Swan's Island. The Maine State Ferry from Bass Harbor to Swan’s Island is one of the easiest ways to get there. Please see ferry’s website for schedule and fees at: www.maine.gov/mdot/ferry/swansisland/ or call (207) 244-3254.
