Under a new Homestead Exemption, Maine property owners could receive $100 from the state in 2020.

More than 300,000 property owners will get the checks in January or February, all due to the state's Property Tax Relief Fund. When the fund reaches a certain financial amount, then some of the money must be returned to homeowners, and the amount returned is required to be no less than $100. What a great time of year to get a little extra cash, when everyone is paying to heat the homes that make them eligible for the refunds. Then again, is there ever a bad time to pick up an extra c-note? I don't think so.

State Treasurer Henry Beck explains the new exemptions, and answers questions about who's eligible on his website.
