I thought when I started looking at this topic that it was going to be a pretty clear division between young and old. I assumed Maine's older folks lived up this way, and I assumed all the younger folk lived in the southern part of the state. I was totally off base!

Silly me, I thought it would be as cut and dry as the oldest would be here in Penobscot or surrounding counties, and that all the young folks lived in Cumberland County. Wrong again! Man, I have to stop with these uneducated guesses.

According to the website 24/7 Wall Street, the median age of the state of Maine is 44 years old. And these two counties were put up against the median age to see where they stood. The results actually surprised me a bit.

Androscoggin County has the youngest population with a median age of 40.7 years old, and sporting a population just over 105,000, with 22% of which being under 18. While in comparison, Lincoln County, also located in Southern Maine, has a median age of 50.1 year old, and a population of almost 35,000. Of that population, over 25% are over the age of 65.

So as I sit here, at the state's median age, looking around at my friends and co-workers here in Penobscot County, and I kinda keep wondering....Are we ahead of the game or behind the 8-ball? Or maybe we're not young or old. We're just super awesome.
