Maine Residents Advised of an Air Quality Alert on Wednesday
People with breathing issues are urged to take it easy on Wednesday after the Maine DEP issued an air quality alert.
Maine DEP Says Much of the State is Under an Air Quality Alert
It's not a day when most people will want to spend a lot of time outside. With temperatures in the 90s and dewpoints in the 60s, it's another hazy, hot, and very humid day in Maine.

But the Maine Department of Environmental Protection says it's not only uncomfortable, but could also be dangerous for people who already struggle with breathing challenges.
Officials say ground-level ozone concentrations are expected to reach the 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' level on Wednesday, for the entire coast, as well as both the Western and Eastern Interior regions of the state.
Maine Officials Say Elevated Ozone Can Affect Many, Including Healthy Adults
Elevated ozone levels can cause issues for children, older adults, those who work outdoors, and individuals suffering from respiratory or heart diseases, such as asthma, bronchitis, or COPD.

In addition, even healthy adults who exert themselves outside may also notice health effects.
Symptoms of irritation include:
- Coughing
- Shortness of breath
- Throat irritation
Some people may also experience mild chest pain.
Mainers are Urged to Limit Exposure to the Outside on Air Quality Alert Days
The best way to avoid having any issues on days like this is to avoid strenuous activity when outdoors, close the windows in your house, and circulate indoor air with a fan or air conditioner.
People with asthma should keep their quick-relief medications handy and have an action plan if they start experiencing problems.
