Long Creek Escapees In Custody After Stealing, Crashing SUV
State police say three escapees from the Long Creek Detention Center are back in custody after the stolen SUV they were riding in was involved in a short chase with troopers in South Portland.
The vehicle overturned after it rolled up on a snow bank, Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Friday.
The three boys, all 18 years old, were wearing seat belts and were not injured.
The SUV was stolen Friday morning in Carrabassett Valley and was later spotted along the turnpike in Falmouth, McCausland said.
Troopers said they attempted to stop the vehicle after it went through the Maine Mall exit, but it sped off.
Attempting to end the pursuit before the SUV got into a heavily populated area, troopers performed a PIT maneuver, which brought the chase to an end.
The teens were on a camping retreat at the Stratton Brook Hut, part of the Maine Huts and Trails system. Police said the teens took off on foot around 7 a.m., and then stole the SUV.
They were also in possession of stolen cash, wine and other items when they were captured, police said.
