They used to say Smoke 'em if you've got 'em in the military.

Doctors used to do television commercials touting how the brand of cigarettes they smoked helped them to relax.

People used to smoke on airplanes, indoors everywhere, even in elevators.

Okay so for non-smokers it's a totally different world now. Unless someone in your family or immediate circle of friends smokes, you rarely see smoking anymore. And more and more people quit all the time. That was the inspiration all those years ago to have a 'Great American Smokeout' and it continues today, November 19th. I remember listening to Don Imus, who was on I 95 FM locally back in the day, and he suggested the Great American Smokeout was for smokers to smoke 2 packs on that day, instead of their usual one. That is just an example, as are where people used to smoke listed above, of how different things are today than just 20 years ago.

The Great American Smokeout is when the American Cancer Society encourages smokers to quit smoking. Resources are available to help Maine residents quit, and help them continue with a tobacco-free lifestyle. The website is Maine Quitlink. If you prefer you can call 1 800 QUIT NOW. Best of luck. If it's your desire to quit, here's hoping someday soon you say "I can't believe I ever smoked"
