Maine Has Had 3 Plane Crashes in Less Than a Month

This is the third plane crash in Maine in less than a month, and the second fatality.

On August 22nd, Luigi Accusani, 74, of Italy, died while landing at Bangor International Airport. An initial investigation suggests Mr. Accusani, who was alone in the aircraft, noticed his wing was too close to the pavement of the runway when he landed. As he tried to correct, the plane caught a crosswind and crashed.

It was just over a week later when a float plane crashed on takeoff from Flaggstaff Lake in Dead River Township. The pilot, Stephen Vorpagel, 62, of Readfield, and a passenger sustained minor injuries in the crash that remains under investigation.

We'll update this story as more details become available.

The B-52 Memorial Site of Maine's Elephant Mountain

Just south of Moosehead Lake lies a memorial that some may not know about. The memorial is a short hike in, right on the southern slope of Elephant Mountain in Piscataquis County.

The memorial is the crash site of a B-52 Stratofortress that went down on a training mission in 1963.

The site is now a popular hiking destination for folks to learn of its history and to pay respect to the seven men who lost their lives that fateful day.

A thank you to Erin from Norway, who took these very powerful images of the site, and allowing us to tell the story through her work.
