A California man is accused of brutally killing his mother, who was visiting from Maine.

California Son Charged with Murder for the Death of His Maine Mother

The Orange County District Attorney's Office says the suspect is Safford James Wolfson, 36, of Laguna Beach, California

He's accused of killing his mother, Angela Caprioli, 61, of Maine, with a hammer. She was in California, visiting her son, when she was killed in his home.

Maine Woman Found Murdered in Her Son's California Home

It was approximately 11:00 am on Monday, July 20, 2026, when Wolfson's grandmother contacted the Laguna Beach Police Department.

She told authorities she found broken furniture and blood everywhere at her grandson's home, and found him on the floor, covered in blood.

Wolfson's mother was discovered in a bedroom with severe blunt force injuries to the head and face.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wolfson was taken to a local hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries to his neck.

California Man Charged with Murder for the Bludgeoning Death of His Maine Mother

He's charged with one felony count of murder and one felony enhancement of personally using a deadly weapon, a hammer, in connection with the death of his mother.

Wolfson is being held in lieu of $1 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in October.

He faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life if convicted on all charges.
