Good Luck Today – It is Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th, considered an unlucky day in Western superstition. It occurs when the 13th day of the month in the Gregorian calendar falls on a Friday, which happens at least once every year but can occur up to three times in the same year
Twice in 2023. Next one is coming in October.
And there is a new Friday the 13th movie coming out today too.
In todays world the number 13 is synonymous with misfortune. Unlucky number 13. Triskaidekaphobia. The fear of the number 13. Although maybe it’s not as avoided or dreaded as much as it might have been a few decades ago.
Herman Munster lived at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. There were no 13th floor in buildings and in some cases not even a 13 as a house number.
There are 12 days of Christmas. 12 months in a year. 12 zodiac signs. So why is 13 the unlucky number.
To most, it seems silly that a number would be in and of itself unlucky.
Lots of Mainers believe that you shouldn’t whistle on a fishing boat. And that if you drop your slice of bread and it lands butter side down, that’s bad luck too. Step on a crack, break your mother's back. Or walking under a ladder or breaking a mirror.
And of course don’t hang the horse shoe upside down or that’s not good luck, it’ll bring bad luck.
Superstitions and unlucky numbers be gone
Maybe the big $1.35 billion dollar lottery tonight will have 13 as one of its winning numbers. Then that would be lucky for the lottery winner and maybe the tide would turn and a hundred years from now they’d be talking about Lucky number 13.
Doubt it. But it could happen.
