The State Fire Marshal's Office says one person is missing after an early morning fire in Fort Fairfield.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the fire was reported just after 4:00 Monday morning. Flames flattened the former three-story farmhouse at 34 Densmore Road, and left one of the occupants unaccounted for. The building had been converted into two apartments. An outside temperature of -5 degrees hampered recovery efforts, but an excavator was being used Monday afternoon to clear the rubble, most of which has fallen into the basement. The name of the missing woman has not been released, but officials say she's believed to be an elderly woman who lived in the building.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
