A Lewiston man was surprised when police accused him of being a getaway driver, after giving his son a ride to the bank.

Lewiston Police responded to a report of a bank robbery at the Androscoggin Bank branch at 550 Sabattus Street just before 12:30 on Tuesday, April 30th. A man had allegedly demanded money before jumping onto the counter and grabbing an undisclosed amount of cash. He then fled the scene in a waiting vehicle. The suspect did not display or use a weapon during the robbery. A short time later, police caught up to 39-year-old Joseph Tilton, who's listed as a transient, and charged him with robbery. He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.

WGME-TV reports that a police affidavit states Keith Tilton had dropped his son off at the bank on Tuesday afternoon, after Joseph told him he needed to cash a check. He waited until his son exited the bank and the two left the scene. He says he dropped his son off in another part of town and then drove past the bank, when police stopped his vehicle and accused him of being the getaway driver.

Police say Keith Tilton won't be charged since they believe he didn't know what was happening.
