History Says Celtics Aren’t Title Contenders After Recent Loss
The most recent loss for the Boston Celtics places them on the wrong side of a historical trend that suggests they are no longer championship-bound.
While the numbers may suggest the odds are against them, the situation still leaves room for hope — because as Kevin Garnett famously reminded everyone, 'anything is possible.'

The Celtics and Nuggets were closely matched early, with 18 lead changes over the first two and a half quarters before Denver pulled away for a 103–84 win Wednesday at Ball Arena.
With the loss dropping Boston to 38–20, the team fell short of the widely referenced 40/20 rule popularized by Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson.

The 40/20 rule is a loose benchmark suggesting true NBA title contenders reach 40 wins before suffering 20 losses.
Roughly 90% of champions have met that mark, with only a few exceptions since 1980. While it is not a guarantee, only three teams have achieved the milestone so far this season — the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, the San Antonio Spurs, and the only Eastern Conference team to meet the mark, the Detroit Pistons.
Beyond the 40/20 rule, securing a top-three seed is another key indicator of championship success.
As only two teams in NBA history have won the title without finishing in the top three of their conference, the Celtics currently sit second in the Eastern Conference. With 24 games remaining before the playoffs, they still have plenty of time to strengthen their positioning.

And there you have it! With their recent loss to the Denver Nuggets, the Celtics have suffered their 20th defeat before reaching 40 wins.
