A Bangor man was arrested Thursday after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase through downtown earlier in the week.

Brian Saunders, 37, was behind the wheel of a silver Mercedes that passed a police cruiser at an "extremely high rate of speed," at about 9:45 p.m., at the intersection of Hammond and Ohio Streets.

The officer pursued the Mercedes which almost struck another Bangor Police cruiser, according to police. A chase ensued which led the officers through downtown and behind the Waterfront concert area. The Mercedes was able to evade the officers when one of the cruisers became disabled.

An investigation determined Saunders was the driver of the vehicle. At the time of the pursuit, Saunders had active federal arrest warrants.

Police arrested Saunders on those warrants Thursday afternoon at a Bangor residence.

More charges are expected, police say.
