A Maine teacher and a spin instructor were shot during an incident unrelated to them in South Carolina.

Two Maine Women Injured in a Shooting in Charleston, South Carolina

It was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Two spin instructors from Maine happened to be outside a pizza place in Charleston, South Carolina when a man got into an argument and started shooting.

Carrigan Allie and Julia Martel are both spin instructors at Jibe Cycling in Portland, Maine, who were in Charleston visiting the company's South Carolina branch.

Allie is also a 5th grade teacher in Westbrook, Maine.

Both women and a third victim were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, after the incident.

The two Mainers survived but the third victim died of their injuries.

WMTW-TV reports Martel has been released from the hospital but Allie, who sustained life-threatening injuries has a long road to recovery.

South Carolina Man Charged with Murder for Shooting that Killed 1, Injured 2

The Charleston Police Department says the shooting happened on King Street at around 2:30 am on May 17, 2026.

Detectives determined the suspect opened fire after a brief argument outside Gilroy's Pizza Pub, before fleeing the scene.

Andre Ramon Nesbit, 35, of Charleston is charged with:

  • Murder
  • 2 counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Police have said this shooting was not random, but was not caused by the victims. The motive for the shooting has not been released.
