Baby Turtles Rescued From Dying Mother Released Into The Wild
Eggs from a turtle that was hit by a car earlier this summer have hatched, and are now back in the wild.
Back in June, an injured turtle was brought to a Bangor veterinary clinic. Sadly the turtle was evidently hit by a car. An outer Ohio Street resident noticed the distressed turtle and had it taken to Penobscot Veterinary Services. They determined the snapping turtle likely had a broken neck and brain damage. Sadly due to the extent of the injuries, the turtle had to be euthanized.
The clinic was able to rescue 38 soon to be laid eggs from the dying turtle. They were transported to the Acadia Wildlife Foundation to be raised. Two months later, 25 of the 38 eggs hatched. Yesterday the baby snapping turtles were released into the wild near Pushaw Lake.
According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, June is turtle nesting season in Maine. Turtles often cross busy roads to get to nesting locations.
