Police are investigating the death of a man in Auburn, who had been involved in a fight, earlier in the evening.

Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland says the man died at Central Maine Medical Center. His identity has not been released, pending notification of family, but they say he was in his 40's. Auburn Police were called to an apartment complex at 116 Hampshire Street just after 11:00 Wednesday night to a report of two men involved in a physical altercation. The victim was transported to the hospital by Auburn Rescue.

Investigators say the second person involved in the fight had left the area, by the time police arrived. While they have not been able to locate him, they know who he is. Police say there's no threat to the public.

An autopsy is planned later today at the Medical Examiner's Office in Augusta. Detectives from Maine State Police and Auburn Police will be on the scene today, conducting interviews and collecting evidence.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact State Police at 624-7076 or Auburn Police at 333-6650.
