Police say a medical issue is to blame for a scary crash that closed the intersection of State, Harlow, and Exchange Streets on Monday.

Bangor Police Sergeant Wade Betters said in a media release that the driver, a 36-year-old local man, suffered a medical issue while driving on State Street just after 5:30 p.m. Monday. His car jumped the curb by the old Hammond Street Senior Center, striking several parked vehicles and light poles. One pole was knocked to the street as the man's car came to rest at the busy intersection.

The driver, whose identity hasn't been released, was taken to the hospital for evaluation. There's no word on the extent of his injuries or whether he's still in the hospital.

Eyewitnesses said the car was traveling extremely fast. Usually a busy part of town, it's fortunate that there were no pedestrians injured in the incident. The intersection was closed for about two hours while crews worked to clear the scene and replace the utility pole.
