Listeners and viewers of several Maine media outlets received calls about "a loud boom" that shook the earth last night between 7:10 and 7:15.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, no earthquakes were reported by the U.S. Geological Survey or by the Western Observatory of Boston College.

During the night, small earthquakes were reported in both Idaho and Oregon, a long way from Maine.

WLBZ TV 2 reports that viewers from Parkman, Dexter and Hartland all phoned in reporting a boom that shook their homes.

The last quake recorded in our neck of the woods was in St. John, New Brunswick back on Sunday, October 29th.  Before that a minor quake was felt in the Eastport area on the 27th.

So the question of the day is what produced this loud boom heard by Mainers in the early evening hours of Labor Day?

Any guesses?
