Two people are facing charges after the death of a fishing boat crew member who fell overboard near Vinalhaven.

Maine Commercial Fisherman Faces Charges After Crew Member's Death

The deceased has been identified as Marshal Ames, 57, of North Haven.

Maine Marine Patrol officials say two men face charges, in part due to altercations with law enforcement after the death.

Geoffrey Barrett, 39, of North Haven

  • Assault
  • Refusal to submit to a chemical test
  • Felony boating under the influence

Theodore Lane, 27, of North Haven

  • Assault
  • Disorderly conduct

Both of the men were taken to the Knox County Jail.

Maine Commercial Fishing Boat Crewman Dies After Falling Overboard

The incident began when Maine Marine Patrol officials responded to a distress call made over VHF radio at approximately 4:45 pm on Thursday.

The caller said a crew member had fallen overboard from the fishing vessel, Long Faces, in Hurricane Sound, near Vinalhaven.

Marine Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard members responded but, before they arrived, a good Samaritan from Hurricane Island recovered Ames' body and began CPR while transporting him to shore.

When they reached Dyer Island, Mr. Ames was pronounced deceased by Vinalhaven emergency medical responders.

His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

Maine Men Face Charges After Altercation with Marine Patrol Officers

Things reportedly got heated when Marine Patrol Officers contacted Barrett, who is the captain of the commercial fishing vessel Ames had been on when he fell.

Authorities say an altercation with Marine Patrol Officers at the dock during the investigation resulted in assault charges for Barrett and Lane.

This investigation is ongoing.
