Two teens were killed and one injured Saturday night in a single-car crash that happened as the driver was speeding away from police.

According to the BDN, the crash happened just before midnight on the Wotton's Mill Road in Union, near the intersection with the Davis Road. An hour earlier, Rockport Police Officer Craig Cooley had stopped the vehicle and given the driver a ticket for speeding. At that time, the driver was alone in the car.

Cooley spotted the vehicle again just before midnight and attempted to get the driver to pull over, once again, but the car sped off. The officer pursued the vehicle along Route 17 and lost sight of after it turned onto Wotton's Mill Road. More than two miles down the road, Cooley came upon the crash scene.

The damage was so extensive, according to the BDN, that Cooley briefly thought there were two vehicles involved. The car had struck a tree on the opposite side of the road with such force, that it split in two.

Sometime after being stopped for speeding, the driver had picked up two passengers. The two people in the front seat were pronounced dead, while the person in the backseat was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The names of those involved have not been released.

Hope and Union Fire Departments assisted the Knox County Sheriff's Office at the scene. The accident is now being reconstructed and investigated by the Maine State Police Department.
