Androscoggin County investigators say a crash that killed a Fayette woman in Turner on Sunday may have been caused by two pickups racing each other.

Who Died in the Crash?

Carol Ivers, 79, died in the crash that happened Sunday morning in the area of Route 4 and Upper Street in Turner. Members of the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office and Turner Fire & Rescue responded to a two-vehicle crash involving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and Ivers' Hyundai Sonata. When they arrived, officials found that Ivers was deceased, and two people from the pickup had been ejected from their vehicle. The driver, Jacob Diaz, 24, of Augusta, and his passenger, Alana Hartford, 23, of Leeds were both transported to a local hospital.

What Caused the Crash?

According to the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office, a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the crash show that Diaz and Hartford were traveling north on Route 4. Ivers made a left-hand turn from Upper Street onto Route 4, and Diaz passed a tractor-trailer unit that was also traveling north. As Diaz passed the truck, his pickup collided with Iver's vehicle which was, at that time, in the southbound lane.

Have Officials Found the 2nd Truck That Was Allegedly Involved?

Officials say investigators have received information that a second truck may have been racing Diaz's truck, at the time of the crash. Deputies are trying to identify the owner of the second truck, which has been described as an Army green-colored Dodge pickup.

Anyone who may have information about the truck or the identity of the driver/owner of the Dodge, or who may have witnessed the two trucks racing up Center Street in Auburn is urged to contact either Sergeant Brian Smith or Deputy James Phillips at 207-753-2599.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
