South Portland Firefighter Dies in Car Accident
A South Portland firefighter lost his life this morning in a two-car crash in Hollis.
Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the crash was reported just before 1 o'clock Thursday morning on Route 202. According to State Police, Fire Department Lieutenant Harry Weymouth, age 46 of Buxton, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt eastbound when his vehicle crossed the center line, striking a 2014 Ford Fusion.
Weymouth was transported to Maine Medical Center where he died at around 4 a.m. from his injuries. The Ford's driver, Zahra Guedi, age 45 of Portland, and her passenger were also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police say speed and alcohol are not considered to have been factors in the accident, and that it's likely Weymouth fell asleep. He was a 21 year veteran with the South Portland Fire Department and a volunteer with the Buxton Fire Department. Weymouth was also a registered nurse at Southern Maine Health Care at the Goodall Campus in Sanford. Officials say it's likely he was driving home, but not directly from his fire department position.
Firefighters from the Hollis and Buxton Fire Departments assisted Troopers at the scene.
