This year, Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race will not have race day registration. Those who want to race need to get registered before the deadline this week.

After scrapping the event last year, Bangor Parks and Recreation says the 2021 Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race is a-go. The registration period for the race will close Thursday. Paddlers need to have completed all of the race registration forms by April 8, as there is no race day registration this year. Race bibs, stickers, and goody bags will be available for pick up for race participants at Bangor Parks and Rec April 12-16.

This year's race will different for both racers and spectators. Changes for racers include a max capacity of 310 paddlers, staggered starting times based on class, a face covering is required until entering the stream, and no warming tent at the finish line. The popular Six Mile Falls area will be closed to spectators. Onlookers who watch from other locations along the stream are asked to wear masks, and practice social distancing.

Last year was the first time Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race had ever been canceled. The event was canceled about a month from race day. Tracy Willette, Director of Parks and Recreation, said: "It's a difficult event to postpone and reschedule since the water level in the stream continually drops throughout the spring, along with the resources needed to safely run the event."

Race day is set for Saturday, April 17. The 16.5 mile race begins in Kenduskeag Village, and ends at the Penobscot River in Downtown Bangor. The race typically attracts around 800-900 paddlers, and hundreds of spectators each year.
