A few weeks ago we asked our listeners and Facebook friends where their most favorite doughnuts were located in eastern Maine.  Between sips of coffee, this is what they had to say.

To begin with, the reason why we made the effort was because Food&Wine.com recently informed the world of the best doughnuts in America, state by state, and as far as they're concerned the best in Maine reside in the southern part of the state.

The online site made mention of Congdon's Doughnuts in Wells, The Holy Donut in Portland, and even Lil's Cafe in Kittery, but nothing of our fine bakeries and doughnut makers here in eastern Maine.

So, we put the question out there on air and via Facebook, and here are the results that came back at us faster than your bother-in-law can eat half-a-dozen honey-dipped crullers.

#5 - Some of the best and biggest doughnuts on the planet come out of the oven at the Bluebird Family Ranch Restaurant on Main Street/Route 1 in Machias. If you're going to take a weekend road trip through the downeast area at some point, stopping here for breakfast or lunch is a necessity.  But whatever you do, don't forget the doughnuts!

#4 - Definitely a favorite, The Only Doughnut on Northport Avenue in Belfast came in fourth in our poll, and we can understand why after viewing some of the mouth watering photos on their Facebook page.  Their traditional Maine potato doughnuts come in a variety of flavors and toppings, but not all flavors are available every day so you may want to follow them on Facebook or Instagram.

#3 - Now if you think that a place that grows apples, raspberries and blueberries can also be known for tasty doughnuts, you'd be correct. That's why Treworgy Family Orchards on Union Street in Levant came in 3rd in our poll.  People go there to take a hayride, pick their own apples, get stuck in a corn maze or pat a goat.  But, they leave thinking about the doughnuts.

#2 - Okay, we knew it would come down to these final two bakeries, because your potbellied daddy could have a field day at either one.  Yes, but this year fans of Gosselin's Bakery on Harlow Street could only muster up 36% of the vote.  But really, is there anything better in life than a glazed doughnut from Gosselin's?  No, not even finally getting to kiss that girl that avoided you in high school would make you forget a pumpkin doughnut from Gosselin's.  By the way, she may want one as well.

I couldn’t resist....
I had to...
It was talking to me!
I can pass up anything pumpkin except for a Gosselin’s pumpkin donut! #thebestofthebest

#1 - This year's doughnut poll winner with 51% of the vote is Frank's Bakery & Custom Catering on State Street in Bangor.  Their designation as this year's #1 is well deserved, as some of the best food on both sides of the Penobscot comes out of Frank's. Breeze through Frank's Facebook page and take in some of photos of their breakfast foods, wraps and dinners, and you'll be drooling down to your shoes.
