A van struck and killed a New Hampshire man who was walking in the middle of Route 3 in Augusta early Wednesday morning, police said.

James Demeritt, 24, of Rochester, was struck by the vehicle just after midnight, Augusta Police Lt. Chris Read told the Kennebec Journal.

Read said the driver of the van, Scott Glidden, 55, of Palermo was unable to see Demeritt, and police don't expect to file charges against him.

Demeritt was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, near the intersection with Bolton Hill and Cross Hill roads.

Police don't know why Demeritt was in the roadway, but Read said the victim was on his way to meet someone at the time of the crash.
