The Gilgo Beach Killer, who murdered 8 people, including a Maine woman, received his sentence this week.

Man Known as the Gilgo Beach Killer is Sentenced for Multiple Murders

Architect Rex Heuermann was living a quiet life with his wife and family on Long Island when he was arrested in 2023, suspected of being behind multiple murders in New York.

Officials say Heuermann lured his victims by hiring escorts, including Megan Waterman of Scarborough, Maine, who was 22-years-old when she vanished after leaving a New York motel in 2010.

The last images of Megan were viewed many years later in a video from the hotel. Police believe when she left the hotel that day, she was going to meet the man who killed her.

Six months later, her skeletal remains were found along Ocean Parkway, near Gilgo Beach on Long Island, as the police searched for another woman, Shannan Gilbert.

The mystery of the Gilgo Beach Killer was solved when Rex Heuermann was arrested in 2023.

In April 2026, he pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and four of intentional murder.

WGME-TV reports that, although he wasn't charged with her death, Heuermann has admitted killing Karen Vergata in 1996. As part of a plea deal, he will not be charged with her murder.

The victims were strangled by Heuermann over a 17-year period and then buried in remote locations, including at Gilgo Beach.

New York Judge Sentences the Gilgo Beach Killer, Calling Him a Coward

On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, a New York judge sentenced Rex Heuermann to three life terms.

NBC News reports the judge commented on the fact that the defendant has been described as a big man, but instead he called Heuermann a "disgusting and despicable small man," and "a coward."
