When Sgt. Isaac Atkins took the stage, judge Mel B was quickly impressed by his speaking voice before he even began singing.

Atkins, who is still enlisted and took leave for the audition, told the judges that performing felt scarier than jumping out of a plane at 18,000 feet, but the risk appeared to pay off.

For his audition, Atkins performed “Beggin’” by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, using the song to showcase his vocal range.

After the performance, Mel B praised his voice and hit the Golden Buzzer, sending the Army sergeant straight to the live shows.

The 23-year-old Lewiston native grew up singing oldies, including Motown and Sam Cooke, in the car with his father before serving six years in the Army.

About a year and a half ago, Atkins began posting in-car cover videos online. As of publication, he has more than 85,000 TikTok followers for videos of himself singing in uniform. America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC and streams the next day on Peacock.
