Southbound traffic on I-95 in Newport is flowing smoothly again after a fatal crash Tuesdy night involving a tractor trailer and a Chevrolet Volt.

New Hampshire Man Killed on I-95 in Maine Collision

Juan Guallpa, 33, of Lempster, New Hampshire died in the crash that was reported just after 11:30 pm on I-95 in Newport.

Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Shannon Moss says State Police began receiving reports Tuesday night of a vehicle stopped in the northbound lane of I-95, near mile marker 157 in Newport.

While Troopers were responding to the crash, they learned that a crash had occurred, involving the same vehicle and a tractor-trailer.

A preliminary investigation into the crash determined that Guallpa's Chevrolet Volt sedan was stationary in the northbound lane when it was struck from behind by a Freightliner tractor-trailer.

The impact of the collision pushed both vehicles into the median, where the tractor-trailer rolled onto its passenger side and came to rest across both southbound lanes of travel.

Mr. Guallpa was declared deceased at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries and was transported to Sebsticook Valley Hospital for treatment.

At this time, officials are not sure why the sedan was stopped in the travel lane.

Southbound Traffic on I-95 in Maine Will Be Slowed for Hours

Both northbound and southbound lanes of travel were shut down following the crash, and traffic was diverted for several hours.

Maine State Police say both lanes of traffic have now been reopened and traffic is moving as usual.

Police say the clean-up will take about eight hours.
